Tuned In is a short film made during the spring of 2024. It was created by After 8 Productions, a student film group of nine crew members in the capstone filmmaking class, Communication Arts 659. This class consists mostly of seniors, and I had the honor of being the only junior of the group. It was a challenging project, but rewarding in every way.
The film is a rom-com set in a radio station and features Jeff, a lonely talk show host who wonders if he can find love over the airwaves. It explores the idea of parasocial relationships and how people behave with celebrity figures. Through a few dreamy sequences as well as phone calls, Jeff must make a choice of whether or not to put his heart on the line.
My role in the production of Tuned In was Assistant Camera and Colorist. As AC, I fulfilled the duties of helping the DP, pulling focus, slating, chip charting, ingesting media, and keeping record of each shot’s details. It was a lot to juggle on set, however, my process quickly smoothed out as I found the most efficient way to perform each task.
Moving into post production, I felt very prepared to color the film. I spent time in pre-production learning how to use Davinci Resolve and refining my coloring skills. I worked with my Assistant Colorist, Noah Giesler, to do basic correction, grading, power windows, qualifiers, and effects on the entire film.
The film premiered on May 4th at UW-Madison's Communication Arts Spring Showcase. Overall, it was the biggest project I have taken on and can't wait to apply my newfound knowledge into my next project.
