In the spring of 2023, I took the Communication Arts 355 class, a course about the fundamentals of filmmaking. Working with two other crew members, Jack Scharff and Eileen Egan, I made a mini documentary about Marathon Runners.
Sarah and Steven are both powerful athletes who had to overcome a lot of challenges to complete their marathons. The documentary focused on the informational side of how to complete a marathon, as well as their individual stories about their experiences.
I wrote, directed, and edited the project with help in each role from my team. I made a rough script of questions and locations, and we ran with it. We scheduled the shoots in the midst of busy college life and executed two excellent interviews. We encountered some challenges due to outdoor weather and inexperience with lighting gear. However, we got great footage and managed to edit a good looking video.
The post production process was tricky since we were working with a lot of different questions. I spent a brunt of time forming the story, while my other members did sound editing and B-roll cutting. We reconvened to make any last changes and all felt great about the final submission. It was definitely a learning experience that I am grateful for.
