This short scene was created during the Communication Arts 467 class, which taught cinematography and sound recording skills. Throughout the class, I and my crew of five others shot and edited a total of 6 scene excerpts from two different scripts. Every shoot, the crew would rotate roles so that everybody would learn something new. The Dinner Table shoot was our fifth shoot, and it was my turn to direct.
For pre-production, I created storyboards and worked with the DP to create the shot list. I organized the shoot and sent out the call sheets for the production day. Directing this scene was a lot of fun. Despite being down a crew member, our group picked up slack where needed and I managed to keep us on schedule. It was my first shoot working with a solid crew, so I was able to really dial in working with actors and learn how to give direction. I got a lot of positive feedback on the direction from the instructor, as well as classmates. In post production, I offered input to the editor, David Guenthner, after rough cuts.
This particular project was chosen for the fall of 2023 Communication Arts Showcase, the only project of our six to be picked. To prepare, David and I adjusted the edit, as well as did some color work. The version here is the final version, and I am happy with the finished product.
